40D colour problems.

Can some of you guys take a look at the following two shots and give me some opinions on what may be wrong? I have a Canon 30D which I am very happy with, I added a 40D earlier this year but have never really been happy with the colour saturation on it, last weekend I had a wedding to shoot and the colour reproduction was really poor at times, so much so that I gave up on the 40D after half an hour and shot the rest with the 30D. I need to resolve the issue one way or another as I can't afford to be be let down like that again on a paying shoot.

These two images were taken with the same settings and lens and I have combined the images so that each half should be a mirror image of the other.

Hi Matt

I'm using a 40D and a 20D. I don't know, where to put the 30D, but I get far bettr results with the 40D than the 20D.

Now, with the photos you link to, it's quite difficult to get an idea. If you send me one original photo taken with a 30D and a 40D, I can have a look at them.

Just as a starter, my settings:
- I usually set exp. comp. to +1/3
- always shoot RAW
- Saturation and sharpness set to maximum. While this doesn't have any impact on the final photo, it gives me a good idea, of what is possible with the photo.

Finally: you can completely ruin a photo with the RAW converter. Which one are you using?

Hi Matt!! 40d's Metering mode is different from the one on the 20d and 30d and in some situations the 40d tends to underexpose. I have done this test also with my 20 and 40d and the only way to have almost the same exposure is giving the 40d a +1/3 exposure compensation. When shooting in bright light I'll leave in default setting !!

Thanks Gerardo, I was hoping you would reply as I noted that you have very similar equipment to me.

I'll try a couple of shots tomorrow morning in RAW, although I don't usually shoot RAW unless I need to.

Ahhhh, in that case, Picture Styles could be a factor. Play around with them. Perhaps you could do one shot in RAW and the next in your usual settings. This will sure help finding the problem.

I have added 1/3rd of a stop exposure compensation on the 40D and reduced the saturation on the picture style settings and while it is still a little off for my liking the differential between 30D and 40D seems less.

I am tempted to upgrade to a 50D but I'm not sure that the extra money is worth paying given that a 50D seems to be all about the 15MP sensor and not much else.
