OK folks, I think this thread has run it's course before it wildly jumps OT. Rick has acknowledged that he got his answer about the 70-300L so thanks everyone for their input. If you want to discuss the merits of TC's then please start a seperate thread.
PS Rick, if you feel like posting any results from your new lens that you might like to show us then feel free to post it into a new thread, cheers!

You dont get 2 in 1. Dont you think if it were that easy, more people would do it? You get a piece of junk and that's it.
If you cant afford lenses of advanced enthusiat or low end semi-pro quality, what kind of mediocre lens can you afford? A bad lens with a TC will yield HORRIBLE results.
You lose image quality and you just blow up a bad image Einstein. Can you read the regs when you zoom into your photo to 200%? No you cant. What makes you think that with a TC you will be able to?
If you want the reg, use flightradar24.com, it has a replay button that works as much as 2 weeks back.
I'm done now, i'll shut up. Stupid kids nowadays like me...

You've heard the last piece of advice from me, obviously, you have it all figured out already

Jan,
The majority of your posts have nothing to do with the title of the thread which by the way has run its course for now.
Your enthusiasm with regard to aviation photography is to be commended and good luck to you.
If your main subject matter is to be contrail shots I suggest you start a new thread for advice on equipment from the many expert photographers on JP.Net. They will be more helpful than the current obsession with TC's. Alternatively search the database and find out what kit is being used. A quick search revealed many photos obtained by telescope(which you previously mentioned) and also the use of the superb Canon 500mm f4L IS with dare I say it, a 2 x TC!!!!! Unless paper rounds have changed since my youth I suggest the telescope is a more realistic purchase.
Aother option is to hire a high quality super telephoto lens.
Happy 14th birthday.
Rick

TC's have their place if you want a little extra reach on a lens that's so good, you can barely see the reduction in image quality.
Im almost twice your age but as Im a student, I can relate to your monetary issues and Im always looking for good value for price. One thing I learned in my endeavors is: Image quality beats mere focal length every time.
The smarter you are, the faster this is going to sink in
Quality is better indeed. I still consider getting one of them as 200mm for contrails with some 1024px crops isn't the best way to go perhaps...
Btw, i'm 14...

Sorry to hear some of you need a converter on your car, I get 600 miles on a tank(of diesel).
With some lovely sunshine over the weekend I managed a couple of hours at Manchester. They were on single runway ops with 05L being in use. This was a bit dissapointing as I wanted some touchdown shots with decent angles. I took the new lens to a spot in between both runways for its first proper outing.
Canon 70-300 f4-5.6L IS
Pros - popular focal range
light and compact
very quiet IS
very fast focus
excellent image quality
typical L build quality
weather sealed
Neutral - zoom ring and focus ring swapped positions
Cons - zoom lock only at 70mm
no tripod mounting ring
expensive(but probably about right when compared to 70-200 f4L IS)
Initially I was concerned that the IS was not working as I couldn't hear anything. I swiched IS off and did a comparison with human v IS and IS won and proved to be working but almost silent. This lens was a joy to use and the results are very good. If they are not up to JP.Net standards it is down to my limited post processing ability. I have read several sharpening guides and still I am not satisfied with my efforts!!
