  • Exif Headers.

Can somebody explain how to read the exif headers?
I really don't understand most of the numbers.
And, I think I'm not the only one!

    IFD0.Make Canon
    IFD0.Model Canon EOS 550D
    EXIF.ExposureTime 1/2000
    EXIF.FNumber 8/1
    EXIF.ExposureProgram 3
    EXIF.ISOSpeedRatings 100
    EXIF.DateTimeOriginal 2012:03:25 18:51:05
    EXIF.ShutterSpeedValue 720896/65536

I've given them all a number, to try make it easier. To be honest, with the JP system, I only really know 1-8 + 12
    1 - f number
    2 - camera brand
    3 - camera model
4 - Exposure time (camera selected (ie, will always be a user selectable option))
5 - F stop (camera selected (ie, will always be a user selectable option))
6 - Metering mode, some exif values will tell you what option 3 is, ie center weighted, spot etc
    7 - ISO setting
8 - Date photo taken according to camera clock
12 - Focal length when photo was taken (useful for zoom lenses)

Some systems will give you the actual shutter speed and aperture (generally both are very close to what is reported) and tell you the metering setup, WB settings and if flash is fired and how powerful it is etc.

    Hope this helps.

      You're right...

You're not the only one. While screening I'm sometimes interested in date/time that the image was taken and if there are errors in the image such as exposure and I'm going to leave a helpful message then the aperture, shutter speed and ISO are normally easy to find.
Items such as in-camera settings for sharpness, contrast, colour are also reasonably easy to ascertain although not all EXIF data shows these.

All those other numbers though could just as well be attempts by aliens to contact us as far as I'm concerned !!
If it 'ain't broken........ Don't try to mend it !
