I am still learning my DSLR and I have been doing some research and people say that 16:9 loses megapixles. Is this true and should I be using 4:3 or 3:2 instead?

Setting the in-camera crop to 16:9 just means the camera will cut part of the top and bottom of the frame. It would make no difference to the quality compared to the other aspects, it will just give you less of the frame to work with when editing. If you get the framing perfect in camera, then it's not an issue. If you need to adjust things afterwards because, for example, you put the aircraft too high or too low, then the 16:9 file will give you much less room to adjust things.
