Who has been spotting at SXM? I might go there this summer. If school ever lets out. Where are good places (other than the bar at the maho beach hotel) to take photos. http://www.gobeach.com/sxmmap.htm
I've visited St. Maarten twice, once for the period of a day while on a cruise, and once for a week on a spotting trip.
The best viewing/photo areas are definitely around the approach end of runway 09, but I'll post a few here that some people may not be familiar with.
My favorite spot is from the roof of the Maho Beach Hotel & Casino, which is easily identifiable as the large hotel just to the north of Runway 09's extended centerline. To gain access to this great spot, enter the hotel lobby, proceed to the back to the elevators, and go up to the 7th floor (top floor below the Penthouse suite). Proceed to the end of the hallway, and go out the door onto the hotel roof, walk to the opposite site, and squeeze between the maintenance stairwell and the Air Conditioning control room. It's a tight fit, but the result is well worth it.
Additionally, if you stay at the Maho Hotel, the cheapest rooms are actually the best in my opinion, affording an overview of the runway 09 threshold and the entire airport property from the great balconies outside. Just be sure to ask for a room on an upper floor (this is even a request option on their website) facing east.
There are other good areas around the airport from which to shoot, especially if you have a decent (400mm+) lense, which I didn't have the luxury of at the times I visited. Next time I'm there, I'm looking forward to hitting the hill on the east side of the airport and trying some departure shots from an elevated position overlooking the field with my Canon IS 100-400.
