I figure this shot would probably get rejected because the plane isn't too sharp but I wanted to get your opinions first. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

The shot is very nice, but I'm afraid the plane is not sharp enough.
Looks like motion blur. Any idea what shutter speed you were using?
Were you shaking the camera a lot when you pressed the shutter button?

Re: Would this get accepted?
Besides being blurry, the plane is to small in the frame.

I guess I must've been lucky.

I think it was probably accepted because of the runway which can be clearly seen.
Perhaps it was considered an airport overview.
Who knows, I still think it's an interesting shot.

Small problems,
1. I took the pic from a window on another WN plane. I wasn't exactly on my own at the end of the runway where I could control the framing.
2. I was using a Nikon CoolPix 3100 digital camera, which has no real shutter speed control.
I appreciate the feedback. Looks like it won't make the page, but airliners.net posted the below pic with far worse blur... think about it.

Yeah, I don't really advise you to use a point & shoot for action aviation photography. There are SOME that seem to do a good job, but not many.
I'd recommend an SLR (film or digital), or an "SLR-like" camera such as teh Sony F707, Fuji FinePix S5000/S7000, or the new Sony F828 coming out soon. These cameras are called prosumer cameras and they are basically SLRs, but without the ability to remove the lenses and put different lenses on.
They work very well for aviation photography in most cases and will give you detailed information on the shutter speed, aperature, etc. and will allow you to change the settings yourself.
But they are pricey, although more affordable than a DSLR.

I suggest you use your Nikon N80 SLR and use some good slide film, Fuji Provia 100F, Fuji Sensia 100, or Kodak Kodachrome 64 (my favorite). I would not go above 100 ISO if you can. If you MUST go higher for any reason, then go for a GOOD 200 ISO, nothing higher than 200 though with the exception of Provia 400F which is a very very good 400 ISO slide film. Very fine grain...
The issue you might run into however is scanning them...you'll need a slide scanner unless the photo developer can scan them for you and put them on CDs.
I know places like Safeway will do that for you for prints only though. Haven't seen any place that will put slides on a CD for you.

Originally posted by SWA733CaptainPT737SWA, it looks like you aren't panning with the plane, and are just waiting for the plane to enter the viewfinder and then clicking the shutter. Follow the plane in the viewfinder in those low light situations and that will keep the subject from blurring like that.

Jeff is right, if you panned with the plane, the background would have become blurred.
It's a nice effect and it shows you that the plane is moving, but it's something you might not want. I assume you probably want to preserve the skyline.
