  • Heat Distortion

Hi all- I just got a landing shot rejected for heat distortion (yes I guess it was heat distorted now that I look at it), but I live in Phoenix- it gets up to 120 max in the summers- how am I supposed to prevent heat distortion?

Shoot around it. Shoot in the early morning and very late evening when heat distortion is at it's lowest.

Yes thats a Good way to Avoid the heat distortion a other is that you try to find palce were between you and the Aircraft is Grass or other material that dont reflect the Heat so much as the Ramp (asphalt).

Or try approach or Landing Shots

Ask airport ops if they can dump a few truckloads of ice water on the tarmac around where you are shooting. Might help.

I don't think dumping ice will work. I work on the ramp in PHX and I get heat distortion from 3 feet away. In the summer the tarmac temp has been know to hit 150.

I find that if I shoot in the morning and in the evening you get great shots!!!

Anyway , I don't know many people who shoot in PHX. I have been shooting from Terminal 3, Level 5 Parking Garage on the South Side or I shoot from Term 4, level 8, Southwest Corner and I have been getting great shots!!

Ice turned to steam...I can see it now...

I put an ice pack around the outside of the lens.

Alternatively, go to somewhere like Norway in Winter...

I forgot to mention that the best part of the parking garages is that the sun doesn't beat on you and most of the time there is a breeze!! Don't get me wrong, it still gets warm so bring water.

That's exactly why the highway is about 20 feet below him.

On a serious note, it looks like an overpass or something like that. That photo gives me an idea...
