Id have to guess about a mile... in the middle of the day.. with all that highway.. there's not much hope in the summer I guess.

Yes that is a pedestrian bridge crossing I-5.. it has this stupid chainlink fence that is about 10 feet tall too, so I had to shoot through it hoping for the best.. it came out alright, except for the distortion.

Even right next to the runway threshold I got heat distortion

There is a little distortion, but not as bad as the first one! They are both good shots!! Can you hit those spots earlier in the day before the concerte gets too hot? I have been going to PHX early because of heat distortion later in the day.

I could probably go early on the weekends.... but waking up early on a saturday or sunday doesnt go well with staying out late

Giving back a little life to this topic again, I would like to ask your opinions on Heat distortion. Do we really have to avoid it to get the pics in JP? I mean, is it REALLY bad for a pic? Why? Will the screeners accept some small heat haze or none at all? I'm asking cuz I really don't know!

Let's put it that way: heat haze is a possible reason for rejection. It's not 100% strict, but if the heat haze kills a picture, then it's a definitive rejection.

But, to be sure, upload, wait and see.

The trouble is, it doesn't necessarily go away early morning or early evening. The crucial element is the difference in temperature between the atmosphere and the radiating object. In the case of asphalt, it's bad news because it tends to hold it's temperature pretty well once the sun starts to dip.

It's one of those horrible little things we have to live with. By the way Grammo, that highway shot is just incredible, heat haze or not. Definite desktop material when I get home

I could not agree more. I think as the summer months creep around, heat haze will obviously get worse. I have said it before, in PHX were as heat is as constant as gravity, you just do what you can.

All but 6 of my shots were shot at PHX at various times of days and they really don't show haze, I just try to move around and find the best angle.
