    I'll throw my two cents in, if you would have included the whole plane in the foreground and had it not been overexposed the shot would have worked.

    The shot is very possible to get without overexposing the plane in the foreground. Go get a piece of black cardboard or something that is completely black, figure out the exposure that the plane in the foreground should be and at the beginning or the end (should be the end) take the black piece off the bottom of the lens where the plane is and let it expose for the right time at the end of the exposure...
