  • Manchester levelling

    Hey everyone

Seeing as it's almost time for the MAN meet, I wanted to know what the rule is for levelling shots taken at MAN on 24L.

Do I make sure that the fence on the far side is vertical or that the runway is horizontal?
Whichever one I do, the other is off by about 3 degrees.

    Cheers

I totally understand where you're coming from. Your best bet is to level the horizon with lamp posts and/or the terminals/tower as best as you can though. Saying that, even those are slightly wonky

    Hope that helps,

    Dale

        Gerardo,
if I had a longer lens I would! 300 is just a bit too short (and soft) IMO.

The thing is that if I level according to the posts, they are only in the background and are quite small. Should I put a note to the screeners when I upload that that is how I've levelled it?

        Cheers

Give a lot of thought to making the picture "Look" level even if the PS measure tool says it isn't.

I recently took a bunch of pictures at Woodchurch private strip. The strip is on the side of a gentle slope. Not only is the runway not level but neither is the horizon as it forms the crest of a gentle hill. To compound the problem the runway slopes one way and the horizon the other. Happily the horizon is mostly tree line but levelling the pictures was a compromise between the strip level, horizon level and aircraft looking level.

This pic is a prime example of the problems encountered.

          http://images1.jetphotos.net/images/....jpg.76234.jpg

The foreground slopes right to left. The background climbs left to right, flattens off and then actually starts to descend left to right over the horizon into a shallow valley!! If you look real close you'll see that the true horizon could actually do with a little CW rotation. Doing that though threw the subject aircraft into a strange position which was further visually compounded by the mown lines in the grass. If you look at the ground to the left of the glider in the background, where the greener runway grass meets the rough, you'll see the true slope of the field. The mown strips under the aircraft are at a different angle to the edge of the runway and give the impression of a steep slope right to left.

Complicated ? Too true it was. It took me some time to get alignment that "Looked" right. It was a bit like using the Leaning Tower of Pisa as a vertical reference.
If it 'ain't broken........ Don't try to mend it !

You mean, MAN contrail shots will be rejected for "too much clutter"? as in "too much clouds blocking the view"?

I was hoping this thread was about Manchester being levelled/flattened with a big bulldozer or something......I guess I'll just have to keep dreaming.

If it was about levelling MAN, I would have posted it as sticky in the forum
