Calibrating my monitor

Hi Guys.

Seems that I have problems with my monitor.

My edited pics, seem ok on my monitor, but when I view them on a tft or so they look low on contrast.

In fact, today I had several rejections.

I tried with adobe Gamme but still the same cause obviously on my monitor everything is seeming to be ok..

Any help appreciated.

I have to agree with you. I've looked at them on the Dell TFT monitor at work and they are definitely lacking in contrast on that one. I'll have another look at home on my LG CRT and see what they look like on that but I have a feeling they'll still need some contrast, and maybe a little less brightness.

Even the histogram points to a lack of contrast.

Thanks for your answer. The problem is that if I move that black-point slider, the photo on my monitor looks really really dark!

Home now and its as I thought. The pics look a little better on my CRT but still need some contrast.

These have +10 contrast added to the right side of each pic.

Notice how the contrast increase seems to slightly improve sharpness as well.

I'm sure most people will say CRT.

I've been seeing some good reviews on the new(?) Dell "UltraSharp" monitors. LG and Samsung have also been getting some decent reviews. I forget what magazine they were in now. I picked the issue up specifically for that write up too. I'll have to hunt it down now.

Your uploaded photos are uploaded in RGB.......for the web you should process and save in............sRGB.....

Hi,

Most TFT Monitors have a low contrast ratio in comparison to CRTs. You need to make sure that you buy one with a contrast ratio of at least 600/700:1 together with high brightness. I use an Iiyama TFT Plugged into my laptop for most of my processing and in comparison to the TFT screen on the laptop and another old TFT screen on a desktop we have there is no comparison. Cheapy screens have a contrast ratio of around 400:1 which means you struggle to see fine detail. Now That you can get TFTs with a higher contrast ratio they are well worth considering and you don’t necessarily have to pay the earth to get a good machine, (although you can pay up to four figures if you want a top flight Pro TFT monitor).

For web images I simply set the monitor to SRGB and convert my raw files to 8 bit SRGB, PSDs before editing them. For printing images it gets a bit more complicated.
