Reject Help (Mostly Sharpening)

Ok, I got Photoshop Elements recently & finally having a chance to work with it, have gone edit-crazy the last few days. I've edited & submitted 15 pictures from my trip to SJU in November so far & as of right now, have had 2 accepted & 6 rejects (with 7 pictures still queued).

The most common problem with my edits seems to be with sharpening, specifically undersharpening. I'm fairly new to editing & I don't really have that good of an idea as to how sharp is sharp enough or too sharp. Here are the rejects so far:

I'd also appreciate help & pointers for things like sharpening & contrast.

Any chance of seeing an original(s) if possible....not knowing your work flow makes it hard to judge.
It appears as toplit/backlit/exposure along with haze is/are the culprit.
Photographing through a windw?

Joshua, so you know the resubmit you sent of the SW 737 was also way too soft.

Greg- I'm not on my home computer, but I can post or send the originals when I get back on there. There was nothing in between myself & the planes, though, so I didn't shoot through a window.

As for my workflow, I've been using Jid Webb's workflow. (http://www.jid.me.uk/workflow ).

They aren't that soft but a few more passes of USM really clears them. Here's my less than 30 second example.
