To me the backlight is not a problem. I would hope the screeners would take into consideration that its not often people get a chance to go air to air with a10s but i do agree it is noisy.
For me this would be a photo to keep for my own personal album.
You might want to try a different sharpening method to stop the noise (noise being the digital version of grain in film) being generated in the first place. Selectively sharpen only the areas that need it. Nice shot...
Depends if you go for photography technique or the value of the image itself.
Yes it is grainy, but apart from that it is fantastic. I personally something like the grain on this needs to be overlooked when you`ve got someone with opportunities like that who is willing to take time to upload to this database.
Not saying you should accept just anything but its worth factors like the above into consideration if the pic is good on the whole.
Dave, you mast be kicking yourself to have your shots turn out like this, I know that I would be unhappy to say the least. Still you have your own web site to them. (I still like that viewfinder mask of yours.)

A kindred spirit!
I too share your comments about this photo, unfortunately this site has its standards and "grain" of any kind is a unacceptable.
Its amazing to think that there are photographers out there that actually put grain into their photos to make them look better....... but not here.
The thing is with a bit more time spent on editing the technical faults on this otherwise great shot can be ironed out. Why compromise?
Yes photographers do put grain into shots, with the intention of making them look dated or have that 'classic' photo feel. This is not a situation that really warrants that look. So Grain isnt unacceptable it just shouldn't be there on this type of shot and is avoidable.
Im pretty sure this shot could make it onto the DB if the correct editing was applied. If you can't seem to get it Dave, im sure Jid or a number of other experienced photoshop users would be more than happy to have a go for you.
From my point of view, we'd love to have it on the DB so do your best with it.
I'd don't use the shadow highlight tool, I use the JID workflow but I'm still on Photoshop Elements 3. here at work(5.0 at home) which neither have curve funtions. PSE 5 has some feature close to it.
I'll give it a few more turns today here but JID if you'd be willing to give it a try I'd appreciate it.

I don't kick myself over this, first A2A attempt and the calendar I have right in front of me has a shot similar with a F-16 & T-38 in it. It's backlit and not level and kind of grainey.
All I can do is think of it as a learning experince, hopefully if I get a next time I'll know what I need to do to help this from happening again. Most of my shots from the flight came out really decent.
