  • Category on this shot?

    Uploaded this picture, should i mark it as a dusk/night-shot? A little unsure about this, so thanks for any advice to this! Furthermore, will it ever make it to the database, or what will it get rejected for?

    I wouldn't. The only thing i ever mark as Night/Dusk are images where the plane is back lit or its a long exposure.

        Are you serious? lol

        Backlit does not constitute as 'a photo taken at dawn, dusk, or night' in my books mate. If the long exposure was taken at night or again in dawn/dusk conditions then yes Night shot may be ticked. But really it doesnt matter if its a long exposure or not, it really has nothing to do with it. Maybe you should go read up on the catagories definitions

          RE the upload:
          looks alittle soft I have to say. Wouldnt tick night shot, the light is enough that it does not warrent this catagory.

            Agree with Dan re: the upload. Maybe a little kick of contrast first before sharpening. You may find you won't need to sharpen then.
            If it 'ain't broken........ Don't try to mend it !

              A lot of shots marked as 'night/dusk' just aren't. They are daylight shots taken in the late afternoon such as this.

              While its a very good photo i do not believe it is a dusk shot.

              My photos such as these could be considered night shots too.

              [photoid=5829343]

              [photoid=5841375]

              [photoid=5843331]

              [photoid=5845277]

              The last on arguablely is a dusk shot but the rest of them are just late afternoon shots. In fact the America West 757 shot was taken just before an actual dusk shot.
              [photoid=5827367]

              Im not trying to start an arguement its just that the lines between dusk and afternoon shots are extreamly blury. One screener will say its dusk one will say its not and I find it very confusing.

                Id say the only ones that should be considered night shots are the Atlas possibly, and the Ameri West. The others are shot in bright light conditions. Simple as that. I dont see how people can get confused with what Night, Dawn, or Dusk, entails.

                These three are night/dusk/dawn lighting shots:

                [photoid=5843645]

                [photoid=5909218]

                [photoid=5843642]

                This is not:

                [photoid=5860308]

                See where im going with this......?

                  Thats just it the first photo i pulled was from a search for the "night" photos category to me it was shot in bright day light conditions.

                  The difference between an afternoon shot and a 'dusk' shot is how you set the white balance.

                  BTW i fully agree with you on the dusk shots you posted.

                    Well id imagine it was a DB error that the UA shot came up under night shot. I have to say id be more inclined to think that the differance between an afternoon shot and a dusk shot is the lighting conditions your shooting in. If your getting that orange glow on the aircraft it falls under the night/dusk/dawn cat. Even if you shot the aircraft close to dusk conditions but the light is such that it could quite easily be mistaken as being shot in the middle of the day, id say don't bother ticking that cat. Really I feel this cat should only be used for shots bathed in tht orange glow you get in dawn/dusk conditions or those photos shot after/before the sun has set and darkness is setting in.
