You can also play with the resample image setting. This will give you all sorts of different results.

Resizing in steps also cuts down on the dreaded "jaggies."Ex: Resize from 2000 to 1800 to 1600 to 1400 to 1200 to 1024
It may take 5 steps, but the quality of the picture at the end will be better.

I resize in increments of 500 (3000, 2500 etc). I find that's usually enough, and it saves a bit of time.
