Nearly all DSLR's shoot images in a 3:2 ratio format so unless you are cropping to a different ratio, most files will end up 1200x800/1600x1067 or 1024x687.
I personally like this format and find photos in this ration preferable to the 4:3 ratio. It is fine to upload at either 4:3 and 3:2 here though.
The most common size i see now is probably 1200x800, however 1600x is becoming a lot more common. People do upload at 1400x resolution now too which is acceptable here. I think that unless the file is top quality and of something a bit special that 1200x800 is the best to upload at. It fills the majority of peoples screens without them having to scroll and it's not so large that people can make a print from the web copy.
I hope that helps.

Reason: Edited one mistake i made
For side on shots I use 3:2 (1200x800) to cut down on the dead space above and below the subject.
I sometimes go to 4:3 (1200x900) for threequarter/front tight crops to fill the frame better.
If it 'ain't broken........ Don't try to mend it !
