First thing would be to make sure you're saving your files at maximum quality. Anything less than that will quickly increase the compression each time you save the image.

How can you tell if there is any compression?

By looking at the image, anywhere there are hard transition lines, you can see compression artifacts. Otherwise, the size of the image itself is a good indication; a 1280 pixel image should be more than 200kb.

Framing is not different than the last version you posted. Borderline oversharpened now, and whatever filter (NR, etc..) you've applied to the second version has caused it to look quite compressed.
