  • Spirit expands Washington service to both main hubs

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (April 1, 2004) – Spirit Airlines, Detroit’s second largest carrier, was today chosen to offer new service between Washington D.C.’s Ronald Reagan National Airport and Detroit Metro, early this summer.

"This is great news both for Spirit and for the people of Detroit. We look forward to bringing our low fares with friendly and efficient service from Detroit to our nation's capital at Ronald Reagan National Airport. We will be announcing our schedule and start date within the next week. We thank the Department of Transportation and Secretary Mineta for granting us slots in order to serve this important market," said Tom Anderson, chief marketing officer and senior vice president of Spirit Airlines

U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta announced this afternoon that Spirit was one of nine airlines to have been selected to provide new or enhanced service to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport under congressionally mandated criteria aimed at promoting airline competition and enhancing air service to the nation’s capital.

"These awards will provide a greater variety of fare and service options for leisure and business travelers across the country who wish to fly to the doorstep of the nation’s capital," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta.
