  • AA's 737s....

How come AA was so late in purchasing 737s? All other major airlines were using the 737 (first and second generation), but why didn't AA go ahead and purchase them? Did the 727/Md 80/F 100 mix compensate for not having 737s? Or was it something else?

The McD single-aisle products. Note that the 1st Generation 737's didnt have transcon range and fill the same mission profiles as AA's Super 80's.

Wait.... the MDs can go transcon?
What's the longest route that the MDs serve?

I think ORD-LAX is the longest MD80 route.

No the MDs dont have transcon range. As stated above ORD-LAX is a long one, so is JFK-DFW.

No, they don't have MD80 transcon flights and it is only for bigger aircraft with B757 or B767 aircraft.

That fact has already been established.

American wasn't 'late' in ordering new 737s. According to Boeing, AA first ordered the 738 in 1996, only two years after the first 738 order. DL didn't order until 1997.

well now wait, AA did fly a transcon MD80 like from JFK-LAX or something like that.

As for 737, AA wanted to buy the 732, and was ready to, but Boeing didnt have a good price and MCD offered a MUCH better deal for the MD80's, if AA didn't like the MD80's they could turn them all back and not pay a single thing. well AA happened to like them and ordered them. the 738 is the only actual BOUGHT 737 from Boeing BY AA. AA acquired 732, 733 from AirCal as mentioned above.

So with the acquired 737s did they fly speicial routes? Or were they used all over the system?

I don't believe they ever have. Their DC9s were sufficient enough for a long time, and then they went with the A319/320 when they needed more capacity.

Chris, you have to admit I bet a 737-700 with winglets would look absolutely STUNNING in the new NWA Colors.
