  • China southern looks to N.america

    China southern has expressed a intrest in adding service to a new list of cities over 2005 and 2006.They are;

    YVR,nonstop from Guangzhou.
    ORD,1 stop likely
    SEA,nonstop from Guangzhou
    JFK,1 stop likely
    VIE,dunno
    LGW,dunno

I heared this through a article in Flight intl and from a pretty good source.YVR would be a tough market, because of Air canada,Air china,China eastern,And cathay pacifics ops. Also doesnt china airlines fly TPE-YVR???
Fly Edmonton first.Canadas gateway to the north.

There's still quite a bit of growth potential on the YVR-China route, as well as the Canada-China market in general. In the summer months, many flights are sold out/overbooked.

The following Asian airlines fly to YVR:
            Cathay Pacific: HKG-YVR, 2/day
            Air China: PEK-YVR, 1/day
            China Eastern: PVG-YVR, 6/week
            EVA Air: TPE-YVR, 5/week
            China Airlines: TPE-YVR, 1/day
            Singapore Airlines: SIN-ICN-YVR, 3/week
            Korean Air: ICN-YVR, 3/week
            Philippine Airlines: MNL-YVR, 4/week
            Japan Airlines: NRT-YVR, 5/week
And Air Canada flies to PEK, PVG, ICN, NRT, KIX, HKG

However, no one is flying to CAN from YVR, so CZ would have a monopoly on the route. One can expect very heavy cargo load on the route too so the cargo revenue would be a comfortable cushion even if pax load falls short. Besides, I doubt pax load would be disappointing. Considering that UA is going to fly SFO-CAN with daily 744, a 3 or 4 times a week CZ 777 service between CAN and YVR would be no problem. China Airlines and EVA Air is not a competitor on the Asian market for China services. They don't fly to China (except HKG and MFM) so no one would fly them to connect to China via TPE. Only CX, JL and KE offers real connections opportunities through their hubs to Guangzhou (CX by bus connection via HKG or KA code-share of CZ's HKG-CAN flights).

As of SEA, I would think they would fly to SFO before SEA. SFO makes more sense.

And by the way, I thought you are going to say CZ is flying to YEG after reading the title.

Interesting you brought that up. I never heard of such a flight. How long does it take to fly from Hong Kong to Guangzhou?
I doubt it's any more convenient than taking the KCR East Rail all the way to Lo Wu. Now that Shenzhen has its new subway, getting around after crossing the Lo Wu border is that much easier

CZ flies 5 times a day on HKG-CAN vv using 737 and A320. KA code-shares on 2 of the flights. The service was the first HKG service started when China opened up in 1978. It was served by CAAC and used the Trident by then. Planes that had been used on the route include 757, 767 and 777 of CZ. But now it's only 737 and A320. It's a 40min flight. Apparently if you are going just from HongKong to Guangzhou, you would be better off by taking the train or even buses. But making international connections at HKG is another matter. It would make sense to actually fly if you are making connections. Air Macau even operates Macau-Shenzhen (!) 2 times a day to facilitate connections to Taiwan.
