    Now that's an interesting message.

I've received passenger manifests before but nothing about allergies

          The joy of unencrypted transmissions

I've read some airlines do encrypt the messages, anyone know which ones? I can see El Al doing it.

now before I finish this installation, I have one more rather pressing question:

Is this legal in the US?

Why wouldn't it be? The transmissions are "in the clear", and can be analagous to using a scanner to hear ATC chatter. There are acarsd servers in the US as well, so you just have to run the client and "listen" in, no need to hook up your scanner to your computer to "hear" ACARS msgs...

I don't know about the US, but it is in Canada. As long as you don't cause the signal to come to you, you can use it. That's one of the biggest reasons for Cable Companies here pushing Digital Cable. Filters aren't always effective, and once the signal is in your home, you can decode and watch to your hearts content. (though it is illegal to sell the equipment to decode the signal)

Who needs ACARS for sports scores, just find a military tower near by, we are almost always "aware" of the sports scores.

so that explains the 30 second pause from when I call up RDR tower till when I hear a response when I'm shooting approaches there
