WOW,......... big-time match this time between Continental and SAS. Brave move from Continental penetrating SAS's market in Scandinavian countries.

Hopefully, this route can last long for Continental since SAS aircraft's provide onboard broadband internet, pretty good service, and very good regional connection.

CO has some strengths too -- EWR, for example, is a very strong hub. They also are flying a smaller aircraft (a 752), so don't have to sell as many seats as SAS to breakeven. And CO has done well in Scandinavia before with its Oslo flight, though that started after SAS abandoned the route.

I can attest to Continental's success in Scandinavia. Through personal experience and through personal readings on various Norwegian online newspapers, success for Continental is evidently shown. While some people will continue to use SAS and connect in CPH, there were still plenty of native Norwegians on the flight. (I think Continental will expand to CPH sooner or later, too!)

Due to competition, I wonder if Continental will be as successful as Oslo. Does anyone know if SAS is successful in filling most of its seats on the EWR-ARN flights.

Well hopefully this route will do well for CO.

How awesome would an EWR-KEF route be? It sure would make things a hell of a lot easier for me.

I don't think the Icelandic government will allow any U.S. airline to fly to Iceland in the near future. I believe they are extremely protective of their national airline, especially on the lucrative U.S. routes. I think that's one of the reasons very few airlines fly to Iceland.

Maybe, but they did allow low cost start up Iceland Express to compete on Icelandair's main routes to London and Copenhagen

Yes, Iceland Express is an Icelandic company. I meant to say, they want to protect Iceland based air companies, no matter how big they actually are.

I guess they could, but Icleandair has a long reputation on the routes, so they would need to have something that would convince people to switch.

I see what you mean about Iceland protecting airlines based in their country, no one else can really get a foot in the market

When I was at KEF 2 years ago I could've sworn I saw a Lufthansa bird.

Charter maybe? Or did Lufthansa used to serve KEF?

Lufthansa Cargo occassionally uses KEF as an enroute-stop. Other than that, LH itself rarely operates charters, that's what they have Condor for.
