  • A Private Jet Question...

Lets say that I flew from POS to FLL on a private jet. Where and how do I go through Customs and Immigration? Also, at FLL there is the Jet Center, what prevents me from just walking through the sliding glass doors to get to the parking lot and enter the US without going through customs and the such.

Also, what about International flights to Executive airports? How do the passengers clear customs and immigration at those airports? Does Air Traffic Control make these planes fly to International airports where there are facilities?
Whatever is necessary, is never unwise.

    ...depends on the airport.

I've been through customs on a private flight at MSY, NEW, VNY, and ORL; and with each airport it was slightly different but mostly the same:

    • The jet will pull up next to an international-capable gate (MSY) or to a remote part of the airport far away from anything else (NEW, ORL, VNY).
    • Once there, an FIS van will pull up and two or more custom agents will board the aircraft.
    • MSY and VNY agents used drug dogs, the other two airports did not.
    • Each passenger is given a written declaration checklist to sign off on, as well as having their passports checked.
    • They ask that we open the storage bins and they (half-heartedly) shift through the stuff in there.
    • They check the bathroom, toilets, cockpit storage bins, and galley storage areas
    • Luggage threshold is sniffed, and matched to the arrival's manifest
    • ...if everything is in order (sounds like a lot, but really only takes 10-15min or so to verify, they do it quite quickly) then you're given clearance to either taxi to the disembarcation area or to refuel and depart

Same as for the freighters landing at MIA. Aircraft lands, then park on a remote spot, then comes the blue van and so on. It goes pretty quick as an average 3 officers are driven along.

I flew private in Janary from FLL to CHS with Flight Options. At FLL, we entered through the Jet Center, in the Signature terminal. I had never flown private and I am going to make some very good critics to the US security agencies. Firstly, you can just press a button on a gate, and it will let you drive on to the ramp to get down your luggae, no cameras, no voice, nothing can stop you from going in, just a button. I could of driven into the runway and caused a mayor disaster if I wanted! Secondly, unluckly, our Citation that was going to take us to CHS had a problem with its fuel ingestion swtich, so we had to wait for another jet, that was great news for me since I had an exclusive 2 hour spotting session on the ramp! How could they permit me, 15 years old, to be taking photos like 3 meters away from the taxiway AND I GOT TOLD NOTHING as officials passed next to me. Of course, I knew what I was doing but for any official, seeing a "kid" like me spotting next to the taxiway would think that I am going to get killed or something. To get into the jet, you just sign a couple of papers and walk by the sliding doors, its sooo easy, you don't have to even have your passport on you, its incredible! After all if the US is soo concerned about airport security, a multi billionaire terrorist could take a BBJ and blow it up if he wants and no secuirty measures are taken with passengers flying private, this to me is very badly done, shame on the TSA.

Last time I checked FLL-CHS was not an international flight so why would you need a to clear customs or show a passport.
I am sure there was some sort of security before boarding, though probably much more subtle than when boarding a commercial flight.

Where I work, the pilots have to "claim" their Pax.... This means a pilot who enters the building, has to sign in and get security clearance ( as easy as it is) to get back out on the ramp. Pax must be with the pilots or a Lineman at all times... Thats just here, some places are quite Fooked up.....

Here is the Customs area at New Orleans Lakefront (KNEW). The blue dot is designated as the point of entry into the US.

Its just like Concorde Boy said, the agent just walks out to the plane, quick search and a check of paperwork and off you go.
