  • Lufthansa @ KPIT?

I heard a rumor a few months ago that was more or less verified by a Lufthansa spokeswoman that KPIT was being considered for Lufthansa service, is that still true?

Yes, PIT is definitely under consideration. Hopefully the US operation stays in some capacity as that would definitely help feed the flight (ala CLT-MUC). Plus, you add in Bayer and you could have a decent performer. The only red flag is US dropping PIT-FRA.....which makes you wonder if it could work on LH metal. Very interesting. Also very hard to say.

St. Louis and New Orleans seem to have the strongest rumor, I've talked to a guy who claims hes in management for Easyjet. This guy claims hes good friends with an LH exec who says they are looking to start service to St. Louis next summer. Could be a lie. I don't know, I do know that LH brass has been to St. Louis before.

New Orleans could fill the plane. But at what pricing? That is a major stumbling block, and part of the reason why AF/LH isn't already there.

Bayer would be the main decisive factor here. Capacity-wise, US can't fill a 762, so how could Lh be able to fill and A330? And feed from US? Forget it, with the HP/US merger, PIT will only shrink even faster. Personally, I doubt this flight will happen, though weirder things have happened.

I see it happening. US campaigned hard for European routes from PIT in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Also, my family tried to obtain tickets a few times on a US flight from PIT to FRA. That was from about April to November. The flights were jam packed. We finally got a ticket (only five seats left) a few months later. And the flights were oper. w/A330-300s. Only reason US aband. was PIT no longer hub, not convient for feed.

Well, I hope the flight was packed from May to August in the first place, or else you know the route is going to get the axe.

If US doesn't think they can make the flight profitable, then it makes me wonder how LH thinks they could. There have been quite a few rumblings however, so who knows....

It will be interesting to see if PDX sticks around, that will be a good measuring stick as to whether markets like St. Louis, New Orleans, or Pittsburgh can handle LH.

Okay, it might have been jam-packed, but the question is, were the yields good? Or did US have to sell tickets cheap to fill the flight? And how would such a flight have fared in the off-season? Lot's of questions that officials at LH are probably asking as well .

there is plenty of O&D for PIT-LHR and FRA. I see both BA and LH coming back to PIT soon. US did even use 330s on PIT-FRA for over a year.

I think the ticket price was $500-700 (?) seems sort of high, though...might remember wrong.

Ticket prices were around $500-600 during winter and around $800-900 during summer.

I also know before US had PIT-LGW BA had PIT-LHR (Maybe LGW) for quite some time with a 767-300. After the US BA agreement US took over this flight.

Wasn't that flight also a 747 for a period of time?

Yes, I think it was. I recall seeing a few pictures of a BA 747 at PIT.
