They are able to do it now. They were able 10 years ago. They don't want to. Its that simple. They don't think Airbus can make much if anything off it, so why spend a HUGE amount of money to make another plane that size and split the market and loose money on it themselves? Ability has nothing to do with the fact that they didn't build an A380 sized plane (but it would be prettier than the A380 if they had!)

Boeing has delivered over 15,200 frames, including planes from the MD lines. Orders are over 16,000.

You may think that, but the 737's been out for around 40 years and acumulated 5000 orders, the 320, 3000+ in 20, TWENTY years. So obvisoulsy, if the A320 was out for the next 40 years, that could double to about 6000 or 7000.
