Delta to fly international from SLC
New plan: The airline will make flights to other countries part of its debt recovery because they are more profitable
    By Paul Beebe
    The Salt Lake Tribune

Delta Air Lines will announce new non-stop service from Salt Lake City to Edmonton, Alberta, next week and may pick up service to Mexico City dropped by AeroMexico when it abruptly pulled out of Salt Lake last month.
The new Canadian route and Delta's interest in flying to Mexico's capital from its hub at Salt Lake City International Airport are part of the No. 3 airline's strategy of making international flying a big part of its makeover as it works to exit bankruptcy within two years.
Delta has said it will increase international flying by 25 percent while cutting its domestic schedule as much as 20 percent. In Salt Lake, where international service is limited, Delta will start daily flights to the Mexican resort city of Puerto Vallarta on Nov. 1. Delta also plans to fly to Mazatlan and Cozumel next March, bringing the number of Mexico destinations Delta serves from Salt Lake to five. . .

^Same here - a little surprised that YEG Boy isn't here yet! LOL

I remember back when DL used to serve YEG with 727-200s and 737-300s.

I think they're most likely going to use RJs - either the CRJ-200/700 or the EMB-170.

Well, by re-reading all posts, I also get surprised YEG's top Ambassador at Large hasn't issued any statement

Wonder if this means they will reduce the 4x daily YYC-SLC flights?? Seems that since UAX started YEG ops that alot of UA mainline to YYC has been downgraded to CRJ service.

Doubt that. YYC will likely stay at 4 flights for the foreseeable future. The 5th flight that operated for a few weeks was definitely too much.

                  You guys are funny!!!

Anyway, Delta will annouce 2 daily YEG-SLC beginning Dec 1. 0700 and 1500 using Bombardier CRJ's. I heard that it will be the -200 but today heard -700 operated by Skywest Airlines. I think the -200 is true. Due to startup schedules, Jan 1 was an option but I think they would want to hit the Xmas market. I believe the announcement has everything to do with Continental leaving a bridge open in the AM rush.

Delta wasn't the highest priority for YEG (and likewise) due to their dilution of the SLC hub and a healthy schedule out of YYC. It's always good news.

                  1x Continental - Houston
                  2x Northwest - Minneapolis
                  3x Horizon - Seattle
5x United Express - Denver, Chicago, SFO (Feb)
3x America West / Express - Las Vegas, Phoenix
2x Delta Connector - Salt Lake

I don't know as a prophet, but you will surely be both an excellent market researcher and route analyst.

The date has been confirmed as December 15 as startup. 2 flights per day with CRJ-200's. I have to feel for "YEG Boy" as the talk is a mile a minute about new services but it's just getting anyone to commit to times and dates. YEG is getting busier, faster and it's that time where anything could happen.

Still waiting to see who will pick up the YEG-LAX run.At this point it sounds like Alaska airlines may be looking at it.The route has always done well from YEG as a major hub city like that would. We shall wait and see,but AS would likely benefit from that routing using a 737-700 or similar type.Afterall U.S. carriers have discovered that International and transborder flights are were the moneys at.

Man, I didn't know they stopped serving Edmonton. I also remember twice daily 757 service in the mid- 1990's.

I should've pointed out earlier that when DL was serving YEG (until 1999, I was told just recently) before, the 727s was the primary aircraft type used - the 733s were actually very rare sights and were likely equipment changes when neither 727s nor 757s were available. I do not recall ever having seen DL 757s, but I'm sure that did also happen - after all, the 752 has a similar or slightly larger seating capacity than a 727-200.

The 757s were here for a number of years in a row,the 733s were used towards the end of DLs YEG services. Its funny how the flights were rather full for DL but SLC was being scaled back and ATL became the priority, hence the reason YEG,YYC and YVR were dropped.Nice to see them back, even if its only Skywest.
