  • SXM over the beach, exhilarating.

I finally did the SXM trip and it was great. Just exhilarating to experience the thrill.

But as I'd mentioned elsewhere, I still cant figure out why the heavies over the beach command such attention.
why are those shots, so plentiful on the site, still popular?

I was thrilled to get a rare shot at SXM, that is, a heavy in the dead of night.
All I wanted was to experience the thrill of Maho Beach and maybe take a photo that has not yet been taken. I am proud to say that this is indeed a rare photo. She normally leaves in the early evening but tonight, she left a few hours late after apparently getting dinged by a belt loader. ADDENDUM: correction, thanks to Miguel, the TRUE reason she left late was because the pilot stated the runway was "contaminated." What happened was that a few hours before, there was a short rain shower, leaving the runway wet. So from what I understand, the crew had to wait until the runway was dry enough to takeoff. I suppose that is to maximize performance during that climb up and away from the mountain at the mountain at the end of the runway. I hope this is a jetphotos.net first, a nightshot of a heavy at SXM.. F-GLZP. Airbus A340-313X. JetPhotos.com is the biggest database of aviation photographs with over 5 million screened photos online!

Also, I hear SXM is expanding its runway but will this also extend out on Maho beach?

No just into the Simpson Bay.

Where did you stay while you were there?

stayed at Sonesta Maho Beach hotel.

if anyone is going, please let me know and I can recommend who to talk to at the hotel. the room was perfect, top floor, at the lowest rate.

Very good place to stay in terms of spotting but also in terms of you are in the midst of everything. good eats, both expensive and cheap, casino, club, piano bar, beach.

getting around, a car is not worth the hassle. $1.50 gets you on a 'bus', a minivan that goes and stops wheer you want it.

but why are "over the beach" shots so popular? I purposely held myself back from uploading those kinds of shots, and threw up any unique shot I could find...actually, I have another great unique shot i should upload later today. another different SXM shot.

A car is very worth it. Unless you don't leave Simpson Bay area.

Don't know I only spend about 30 minutes to an hour @ SSBB watching the planes. The current owner or previous owner is a nut job. Most of the time I'm in the area I go over to my friends house in Beacon Hill area (keep going up the dirt road, which will soon be paved, thanks to all the home owners there)

Yeah the current owner of the beach bar is a retard man. Its gone way down hill and turned into a bit of a fat sunburtn tourist attraction now instead of the nice chilled out bar it once was. If you know the right place to stay the Maho can be great. Im guessing you had the corner room on the top floor with a balcony that overlooked the airport and the beach? Ive stayed in that a couple of times. Its awesome

Nice pic! I haven't seen any other pics of heavies at SXM at night on the database. Was this flight delayed?

yeah, I think it was delayed 2 to 3 hours. Then someone who was on the flight told me the precise reason for the delay.

Dan, I think thats the one. But it was just wicked, the place and the view. And you are right, that SSBB is a tourist attraction. WE should but the guy out and make it what it once was. The bar on the opposite side of the beach is a bit more homey these days.

To answer your question, the reason why Maho Beach overhead shots are so very popular is because there are no other places where an opputrunity like that exists. Sure, people can get some great apporach shots at other airports, but @ Maho beach there is some major "WHOA" appeal, to both seasoned and non-aviation enthusiasts. I hope to see more "non-typical Maho Beach" shots soon, and your shot is one that I really thought was cool because it was completly opposite from the "typical" shot.
Whatever is necessary, is never unwise.
