Have you ever flown on a flight with a convict? I mean, have you ever flown on a civilian flight where a prisioner was being transported, where the prisioner was being escorted by police? Does it happen normally? Or is it rare? Or is it prohibited? I have never seen it done, and I know that I have never been on an aircraft where it has happened that there was a prisioner onboard. The most that I have seen is where I have been on flights with deportees, but not prisioners. So anwyay, if it does happen often, what are the precautions?

I once was on my way westbound on a Canadian Forces 707, aisle seat, and was sitting next to a young soldier in the middle seat, and we got to talking about where we were going, he said Edmonton, and I said oh yeah you will enjoy it there, I lived there for many years etc etc . He got a little flustered and said he was going to "Edmonton" at the same point the NCO in the window seat started to chuckle. Ever see Jack Nicholson in "The Final Detail"- well this soldier, a Van Doo as I recall was being escorted to the slammer, ie Canadian Forces Service Prison and Detention Barracks aka Leavenworth North , located in CFB Edmonton. I later had a tour of the place some years after, gave me the creeps.

Not personnally, but I heard of
-a transfer undertaken from Montevideo to CDG by AF. The convict was a former mayor of Nice who was under trial and escaped instead of showing up. An international warrant was issued. The guy got nabbed at Punta del este where six cops in plain cloths picked him up. On board the 343, the party was accomodated at last row.
-another from Vilnius to CDG courtesy of Lithuanian to bring back a runaway escorted by two guys.

I have never flown with a convict, but working the gates I have put them on quite a few planes...normally 2 cops per criminal and we sit them on the 3 seat side with the criminal in the middle if it is in the center section (767) or at the window if on the side (757/md-88/90)...if the criminal is white collar and not dangerous at all I have boarded them without the cops flying along, they escort the criminal to the boarding door and stand there till I close the door and they are met at the other end by the local cops...
Yes, they go thru security like everyone else - the criminals are selectees and the cops are just waved thru...

I've flown plenty of them. Our FOM requires two armed officers to escort the prisoner unless the prisoner is military AWOL, then there can be one escorting officer.
I've never had one on the airplane cause any trouble, and if it weren't for the escorting officers declaring their weapons to us, we'd never know there was a prisoner on board.
I'd have to look, but I'm pretty sure prisoners are not allowed to be handcuffed while on the airplane. I don't think I've ever seen one that was cuffed.Bite me Airways.....

Our On Board Manual states that handcuffs are permitted in flight but must be out of view from other passengers...The only restriction we have is the use of remote controlled restraining devices (ie..shock belts) is prohibited on Delta aircraft and the prisoner must be dressed so as to not draw attention - meaning no orange jumpsuits...

Every once in a while (that I personally notice), maybe about once or twice a month (I'm sure it happens more often) I notice then flying. Half the time, a normal passenger won't notice it. It depends on level prisoner they are (min, med or max security) if they will be with 1, or 2 escorts. They are usually boarded first, so not too passengers notice, and the handcuffs are covered usually by a sweater or something.

There has been those precautions and "what if" and so on.
I dont know if you guys know a danish citizen Peter Lundin, a murderer that was transferred from the States to Denmark. The FBI was like *Who's gonna take over this guy at CPH airport ? The Danish police didnt even send PET (Politiets Efterretnings Tjeneste) although the FBI requested more experienced police officers to take this guy to jail. Anyway luckily nothin happened. All went after the book. I wouldnt want to be on that flight though. Sira Ulo!
Nah Not personally.Inactive from May 1 2009.
