  • $29 Dollar fares on inter-island fares in Hawaii...

HONOLULU (AP) — How low can airline tickets to the Neighbor Islands go?
Hawaii's newest airline, go!, began offering $29 one-way trips between Honolulu and the Neighbor Islands this weekend.

That's a $10 drop from the $39 fares currently offered. Both Hawaiian and Aloha airlines say they will match the new fare.

The new prices will be valid on tickets purchased by Tuesday for travel completed before Sept. 30. The offer is good for travel between Honolulu and Hilo, Kailua-Kona, Lihue and Hakului. One-way flights between the Neighbor Islands will cost $58.

Go!, which is run by Phoenix-based Mesa Air Group Inc., immediately sparked lower fares in when it started flying in Hawaii on June 9 for $39.

"The mission of go! is to bring friends, families and business people together by offering exceptional service at the lowest possible price," said Jonathan Ornstein, Mesa's chairman and chief executive.

Aloha and Hawaiian airlines say they will not let go! undercut their business.

"Aloha offered several thousand seats at that fare last week," said Aloha spokesman Stu Glauberman. "We will continue to be competitive."

The long-term viability of these fares was questioned after Ornstein recently said the company is losing $300 per flight at its $39 rate.

But go! wants to solidify its place in the Hawaii air market, and it plans to make money when it brings in larger regional jets next year, company officials say.

Go!, which currently operates five 50-seat Bombardier CRJ 200 planes, announced last week it will bring in 90-seat CRJ 900s or 116-seat Embraer 195s by late 2007. The existing planes are operating at between 80% and 85% of capacity, said spokesman Joe Bock.

Ok, I support the notion that giving people lower fares is a great thing, but this is rediculuous. How can an airline make a profit on a fare like that? I mean, for the other airline (Aloha and Hawaiian) they are not getting money pumped into them from mainland sources. This is horrible. I hope that we see a normalization fares soon.

BTW, on these interisland routes, are there baggage limits? I mean, are there limits that are lower than the conventional limits for US domestic travel? And also, has anyone here ever lived in Hawaii? Is it more expensive to love out there than in other parts of the US? I mean, it the cost of living higher than NY or CA?
Whatever is necessary, is never unwise.

Sounds like a great deal if you can get to Hawaii first.
