AirTran Airways has signed on as the official airline of America's 400th anniversary, an 18-month series of national events commemorating the 1607 founding of Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in the Americas.

I wonder really on how you become the official airline of anniversaries ..

Do you apply for it, and say I will support the anniverary and will offer these flights.. blah blah discount whatever and so on ??

Can anyone enlight my mind about this one ??

Would've made more sense to pick American Airlines.

Well its too late... The organisation can't reverse this and say We'd rather want American Airlines to support and be the official airline instead.

AirTran probably gave them money. It's essentially just a tagline to use in advertisments. The anniversary manages to associate the airline with something people will be paying attention to. It's basic advertising.

Yes, I like AirTran, but of all the airlines, why would they pick AirTran? Even Southwest would have been a much better choice. AirTran must have offered some money or something along those lines.

Don't sweat it, it's not even the real quadricentenial (which won't occur for another 170 years  ). It's not even the real TRIcentenial. Hell, it's not even an AMERICAN settlement. If anything, the 400th anneversary of Jamestown's official airline should be BA It's just a gimmick...and a dumb one at that.

I think you're right, the 400th anniversary should be in 2176.

They surely not only give lots of money but also provide for air transport to the organizers' comitees. Otherwise, this should do good to AirTran, although it's not the birthday of the USA.

Pfft, if Air Tran actually believes this advertising will make them money...
"Hey, we are celebrating America's 400th anniversary!"
"Aren't you around 170 early with that?"
"No no, the 400th anniversary of the first settlement on American grounds, Jamestown!"
                      "Where?/Who?/WTF?"

Like Greg said, the only way anybody becomes the "official airline" of anything is when they pay money to be that.

I guess AA wasnt interested to be the official airline then If they had to pay to be the ONE ! Money went to somethin else. Like paying its staff instead.
