    MSNBC News Services

TEHRAN, Iran - A plane with 147 people on board caught fire as it was landing Friday in Mashhad in northeastern Iran, killing 80 people, state TV reported.

A tire blew out as the Russian-made TU-154 was landing, sparking the blaze, the report said. No crew members died in the fire, and the other passengers were evacuated, state TV said.

The fire was under control and investigators were at the scene, state TV said. It did not say it the blaze had been extinguished.

The flight run by Iran Airtour, which is affiliated to Iran’s national air carrier, originated in Bandar Abbas in the south of the country.

One of the scariest flights I ever had was leaving Kabul on an Azerbaijan TU154M . We had to ID our luggage before the loaded it, and in doing so saw the nastiest looking tire (bald, fabric showing)ever on the front landing gear assembly. Made it to Baku in one piece fortified with a tumblerful of rot gut vodka.

The "Rule of Three" again it seems. Very sad . Though thankfully at least 67 people managed to escape the fire.

Death toll updated to 29. Another example of premature false info from the media.

Interesting how a tire fire can cause so many deaths. A sign of Tupolev quality.

Why dont you wait with that "comment" of Tupolev till you hear the full report. Maybe you already forgotten the Concorde crash. What's the chance of the info being giving the tire as the probable cause of this crash ? Maybe there could have been debris or some sort that could had caused this. Btw Tupolev is not in responsible how an airline like this Iranian airline treat Tupolevs product. That's beyond their control.

Oh Btw. Im talking about the real investigation report, NOT the media's report.

Especially not the Iranian Media. It actually wouldn't surprise me if they had been told to lower their death tolls they are writing about.

i reckon. some people react to accidents of Russian a/c as if airbus or boeing built a/c have a perfect record. nice wording too btw.

what a horrible accident. Thank god there were atleast survivors. So, is the death toll 29 or 80?

Now Iran Airtours may be up to acute problems as for their flights outside Iran. To cool down some CAAs around their countries, expect them to either beg parent company of a couple of 727s or strike a deal with Iran Asseman.
