  • Avianca MD-80 @ JFK!

Take a look at this pic...

Does Avianca use MD-80s on routes to Colombia? I mean, that is a hell-of-a-long-route for an MD-80 isn't it?

Was this a rare visitor or do these MD80s opperate into JFK often? If they are used on regular flights and it wasn't a one time deal, you can probably check flightaware to see where the MD80s are headed.

Long flight, but doable for an MD-83, as its range is 2,504 nautical miles, and no JFK-Colombia route is longer than 2194, namely BOG. Though in all likeliness, this MD-83 was used from either Medellin or Cartagena, both of which are shorter than JFK-BOG.

Avianca only uses to MD-83 to JFK in the flight from Barranquilla (BAQ), the other flights operated by Avianca in/out of JFK are operated by 757s o 767s (from CLO, MDE and BOG)

Scary. I'm never comfortable on an MD-80 (for dunno what reason) on an ORD - DFW flight, can't even imagine doing one on a route that long!

As said before, AV uses its MD 83 for flights BAQ-JFK. CLO and MDE get 757s and BOG gets the usual daily 767.
Avianca: Second oldest airline in the world.
First carrier to operate the 747 in Latin America.
Will be the first one to operate the 787 in Latin America.

The late non lamented JetsGo used them YYZ-YVR as I recall, about 2077 miles. I would not find them scary, perhaps just a little confining after four hours or so.

                Similarly,

Airtours operated MD-83's to the Canary Islands during the 1990's. A trip of 4-4.5 hours-or-so, dependant upon UK departure airport.

Many european charters did so in the 90ies and it was no worse then a 737 or A320 if you did not sit directly near the engines that is.

Not to mention that the 2-3 or 3-2 layout of the MD family is also favorable over the 3-3 layout of A32Xs and 737s if you can get the 2-seated side . One person less to climb over is always a good thing.

Yep, with a sweet girl next to you the trip was a real pleasure on the 2 seat side.

I have pictures of a Minerve MD-80 taken at JFK back in the early '90s.

I still have no idea what it was doing there.

Sounds like a delivery flight for Minerve. Early 90's is when most of their MD-83s were delivered to them (or rather AOM after the merger between Minerve and Air Outre Mer). Possibly routed something like LGB-JFK-KEF-ORY, which should be no problem for an empty MD-83.

                            Hello!

It seems that was a subsidiary of Minerve in Canada: Minerve Canada.

Minerve Canada operated DC-8s and at least one MD-83 leased from Minerve on flights from eastern Canada to several leisure destinations. Maybe this could be the reason for the Minvere MD-83 in JFK?

                            Best regards!
