Northwest Airlines Could Eventually Own Midwest, Which Is Being Acquired by TPG Capital


MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Northwest Airlines Corp. could end up owning rival Midwest Air Group Inc., which has agreed to a $450 million buyout offer from private equity firm TPG Capital.
Northwest is a passive investor in the deal and may eventually buy Midwest outright, TPG partner Richard P. Schifter said in a conference call Friday morning.

The equity firm may want to cash out of the deal some day, he said, and Minneapolis-based Northwest could become the sole owner. Schifter said such a move could be several years away. Source

That's really too bad for both the employees and the passengers who like Midwest.

Well of course TPG is going to sell off Midwest eventually to cash in on its investment, but that's still several years away. The chances of NW buying them though would have to be the same as FL getting them or maybe YX going public again. Anything can happen, but its still several years off.
