Why would they bother to even file an IFR flight plan for such a short flight?

Delta does that all the time LGA to/from JFK 738 or MD88 ferry flight. Sometimes EWR-JFK. Also, LAX-SNA DL and AA. Best to check on www.flytecomm.com click "GO" on orange circle logo.

EGF has, I'm pretty sure they still do, a fairy flight with an ERJ-140 SFO-SJC every night. As soon as the thing is out of the SFO class B it goes straight to SJC tower and enters the downwind.

I think company policies require all flights opperate under IFR, even these little 4 or 5 minute ferry flights.
