  • Dan Rather - Boeing 787 Dreamliner 'could be unsafe'

BOEING'S new carbon-composite 787 Dreamliner plane may turn out to be unsafe and could lead to more deaths in crashes, according to a report by veteran journalist Dan Rather to be broadcast in the US today.

Interesting read. Thanks for sharing Mr. Jackson. But I agree with Boeing it is a safe plane and if they knew it wasn't safe, they wouldn't do it.

The material is safe, otherwise Boeing wouldn't build it, supercars wouldn't be built from it, etc. Crap like this from the media really pisses me off.

Well said. One Channel is so bad in Chicago especially, that I will not watch one of the Channels. As one of my non-aviation friends said to me "If it's Dan Rather, that's your first red light, he could say that Wal-Mart made $$ and I wouldn't believe him"

This from a guy who was forced to retire because he used faked documents to try and bring down a sitting President.

The claims came from a retired former Boeing engineer... Not Dan Rather. That being said the plane has to go through all the various certification tests, so les see what happens. It hasnt even flown yet.

I have no doubt it will fly. WIth today's advanced computer simulations, if a plane makes it to the production line, it will fly. I also guarantee that Boeing did their homework and is confident in the safety of its aircraft. I remember reading something similar about hte A380 from a former Airbus engineer. Needless to say, he was wrong.

Even if there is any truth to what rather is saying, I would be willing to bet that the 787 will still fly, and for many years to come as well. He sounds like the kind of guy who would say all of this stuff just to get attention, not the guy you want to trust.

I'm not concerned. Composites have been used in many different aircraft designs for quite some time. The plane I fly is actually made out of fiber glass reinforced plastic. The article makes it sound like Boeing just comes out with a plane and airlines start to use it. Kinda overlooking the whole FAA testing thing.

He in fact is not totally wrong. Composites shatter, while aluminium just dents. You cna see this in formula one cars. If composites fail, they shatter into little pieces. Yet he forgets that they are much stronger. If the composites shatterm, the conventional structure would also show gaps as the connection between fuselage structure and the outside panels would fail before.

The 787 might be much more safe then convetional desgins. Or simply put, before a 787 fuselages shatters, the lower deck of an A380 is flattened in a crash.

Let's see, a disgruntled ex-employee that tried to blackmail his boss provides info to a "newsman" that is about as believable as Saddam's former spokesman "Comical Ali" - yeah, sounds like an article I would really believe...

Obviously with the future of the Qantas Group hinging on the 787 it is getting quite a bit of press here:

Aussie experts check Dreamliner 787 safety
A TEAM of Australian specialists will review the safety of Boeing's 787 Dreamliner after claims the plane could smash apart and emit toxic chemicals if it crashed.

I won't go so far to say that it's unsafe. But it is, theoretically, riskier, simply because the material is new, so we don't know for sure how it would react in different circumstances, while the aluminum alloy is proven by actual use for 50 years. But now we have much more sophisticated computer simulation so we should be able to test the material vigorously. It will never get to the "risk" level of existing material, but the risk is acceptable.

If we never accept risk, we will never progress. We would be still living in caves eating hunted animals raw. After all, it's our ancestors who took the risk to try "fire" to cook. So if they could take the risk to try something new, why can't we?
