  • BA lists India as 2nd largest market!

Observing that India was a "voluminous route", British Airways has listed the country as the second largest market after the US and the third after Australia in terms of its revenue share.

The premier airline, which used to operate 19 weekly flights to Indian destinations two years ago, now operates 43 services from London Heathrow to five cities here.

"India will be the next biggest after the US in the long-haul market. ... As far as revenues are concerned, India is the third largest closely competing with Australia (in the second place after the US). Our plans are to stay big here," Robbie Baird, BA's Area General Manager for the Asia-Pacific region, said in New Delhi.

Asked whether the British carrier would deploy the largest aircraft, Airbus A-380, or the long-haul Boeing B-787s on the India sector, he said the airline's policy was to consolidate and then expand on the existing network.

"We have done so in Delhi, Mumbai and now in Bangalore. While in Delhi and Mumbai, double dailies to London-Heathrow have been launched, the aircraft size has been expanded on the Bangalore route from B-777s to B-747s," Baird said. Indicating that the large planes could be introduced in the Indian sector in the next 4-5 years after they were inducted in the BA fleet, he said "but who knows how fast the market grows" as witnessed on the India route in the past two years. "It depends on how the demand grows here".

Wow, growth in India has really show itself. Who would have thought that India would have grown so quickly. So maybe we will be seeing those BA A380s at BOM, DEL and MAA as soon as they get to BA?
Whatever is necessary, is never unwise.

Doubt it. The Kangaroo Route, LAX, and if the FAA gets too restrictive, JFK will likely see BA A380s before India. Though no doubt that at a later time BOM and DEL will be seeing them as well.

Sounds good for BA and also logical! London is probably the biggest foreign Indian hub, and with large population numbers at home good to see that big planes are coming up full!

BOM will definitely see the 388 before DEL, and I believe quite soon after JFK/other U.S. markets IMO. BOM already has double-daily service year-round and the 388 will be a big money-maker especially with India heavy winter traffic, when airlines duke it out for slots on the international routes. BOM has eight daily nonstops linking it to LHR, and with the airport becoming increasingly congested, the 388 should do well to add seats without adding more frequencies.

True, but at the same time consider that the number of competitors is also growing quite a bit. In 2 years or so, you'll likely have a choice between BA, VS, BMI, AI, Jet, IT and perhaps Silverjet, and while there's a lot of demand LON-BOM, it will be spread out among more airlines in the future, this rendering the A380 not that necessary for a few more years.
