HNL-Europe nonstop flights, good luck making those work.
During the '80s and '90s used to fly charter services mostly to Germany and Switzerland first using the DC.8s and then the L1011s. Some reasons to make up HA's mind :
- the Islands are still very popular in Europe and especially Germany
- flying non-stop will allow them to
- resume the service on their own, no more TO to rely on while developping a niche market
- wanabee surfers and well off executives often are the same persons
- supress the cons of mendatory en-route stops required by the lack of range of the DC.8 and Tristars
Don't know, as their website doesn't give their age, but what I know is that the 4 763s they acquired from DL were delivered to DL in Nov/Dec 1986, making them 21 years old, and 4 ex-LTU jets, 3 built in 1989 (18 years old) and one in 1996 (11 years).

Probably a combo of large discounts by Airbus to get HA to order the A330 AND A350. IIRC, Boeing still has quite a few 787 delivery slots for 787s available, 1 year after the A330 and 4 years before the A350, meaning that way HA could have just gone with ONE plane family (787) instead of 2 (A330 and A350). That said, the fact that HA is even planning for deliveries that far out is somewhat unlogical, as most carriers only plan that far out when they have a plethora of jets coming (say, like WN) or when they are delaying deliveries to a late point (see AA's remaining 777 orders), rarely if ever do they schedule orders 10 years in advance, and there's absolutely no doubt in my mind that there are still A350 delivery slots available before 2017.
Wow, didn't see this comming. I thought they were fine with their 763s to get them where they needed to go. We'll see how well 330s and 350s to EU will fill up...
