    South Africa's Nationwide grounded
    Monday December 3, 2007
Nationwide Airlines of South Africa announced Friday that the South African Civil Aviation Authority suspended the carrier's Aviation Maintenance Organization license, resulting in the grounding of all flights. "We have approached the CAA for further details and guidance in respect of any actions they would like us to implement that would enable them to reinstate the AMO's license at which point normal operations will resume," Nationwide CEO Vernon Bricknell said in a message to customers posted on the airline's website. He said Nationwide does "not anticipate a prolonged disruption of air service."

On Nov. 7 the right engine failed and fell off a Nationwide 737-200 during takeoff from Cape Town, resulting in the temporary grounding and inspection of all -200s in South Africa. The airline said CAA inspected its maintenance operation on Nov. 12-13 "without any findings of nonconformance or noncompliance." It operates one 767-300, two 737-500s, 11 737-200s and three 727-200s on more than 350 weekly flights to eight destinations including London Gatwick.

Sad news. I flew them on a domestic flight from George to Johannesburg in 2003, and this has been my only 727 flight so far... Let's hope they get back on track!

I'd hate to see them go under while they still have 722s and 732s up and flying.

In addition to the 727s, we may be up to loose a South African alternative to SA in flying from Europe to South Africa.

Yes, it's in fact the only South African airline - other than SAA - that operates flights to Europe. They only have a single scheduled service to Gatwick though......

^Still better operate good schedules focused to LGW than spliting there and then to an assortment of destinations, all of which ultimately ending up with desesperatly low frequencies.
