  • Proud additions to Star Alliance!

Air India (Mumbai) and Air China (Beijing) are expected to be announced on December 13 as the newest members of the Star Alliance.

JetPhotos.com is the biggest database of aviation photographs with over 5 million screened photos online!

Although I would have loved to see these airlines go to other alliances (seeing that everyone seems to want to go to Star), these entries were hardly a surprise. Congrats to both airlines and to Star Alliance. This works well for AI as their German operations will be in conjuction with LH. Great news!

BTW, I love the new source that I used! FANTASTIC!!!
Whatever is necessary, is never unwise.

After reading the articles about MUC and AI I am a little confused about the following parts:

          - The text mentioned a third terminal under construction at Munich but I dont think this is true, at least I never heard of that.

          - Space for 30 aircraft; why would they need that when eight flights a day are planned.

          - When do the operations at MUC start?

          - What does LH say?

Would be great if anyone could shed some light on this - thanks!
          greetings,
          Philip

            What does LH say
I could imagine that LH and AI will coordinate traffic. Maybe Air India will focus on Munich while Lufthansa will focus on Frankfurt regarding traffic between Germany and India.

Thanks for the articles, Vishal. I totally missed on this AI - MUC case.

With MUC as their overseas hub, there will be more room for route-expansions.

Only a rumour, but AI has long planned a daily flight from DEL to the danish Capital city, Copenhagen.

Sorry about the quality, as these were shot in extremely difficult conditions & with my Casio Exilim EX Z-750 which really isnt meant for night photography so..............

Anyways, geting back to the topic. Lufthansa's seems to be doing well in India, for one their Ads are everywhere, on buses, in newspapers, Hoardings & just about everywhere else.

I just hope they send in their A346 to BOM alternately.

About Air India, there's been a lot of negative publicity towards AI as due to maintenance or pilot/crew shortages their flights get delayed here & there & it gets highlighted like primetime news.

Just hope that people here in India learn to look beyond it & at the larger picture for the betterment of AI, as Praful Patel (Civil Aviation Minister, India) just quoted in a press conference to Air India,
"I have no hesitation to say the government can support to an extent. Beyond that, they have to perform on their own or perish"

There were some negative publicity towards much delayed flights etc. but let us hope that Air India will operate smoother in the interest of their passengers. The Star Alliance-membership of Air India shows that Air India seems to have reached an acceptable level in most departments. Star Alliance would hardly accept a new member with not reaching the standards set by the Alliance.

Thanks mate, here's heaven in all its glory.
However, its really not that easy a spot as it seems to shoot from as it is patrolled heavily by security gaurd from below, inside the airport periphery & although this spot is outside the airport periphery wall the security guys dont seems to take too kindly to anybody shooting airplanes from there.
Which is what explains the complete drought of aviation photos from India.

                        Besides the big news,

                        Star Alliance accepts Air India.
                        Press Trust of India
BEIJING, Dec. 13: Star Alliance, the 19-member global airline grouping, today voted to accept India's national carrier Air India in the club that offers passengers a choice of over 17,000 daily flights across 160 countries.
“Air India is delighted in being invited to join Star Alliance... In addition, the recently announced fleet expansion of more than 100 aircraft will help Air India serve the travelling public better in terms of global reach and services,” Air India's chairman and managing director, Mr V Thulasidas said in a statement.
The decision to accept Air India into the grouping was taken by the Star Alliance board that met here today.
Star Alliance board chairman, Mr Glenn Tilton, who also heads United Airlines, said: “India has long been on the radar of Star Alliance... Having now come to an agreement with Air India makes us the first airline alliance to secure a member in India, which will enable our customers to receive more benefits when travelling to, from and within India in the future.”
Mr Thulasidas said that the Indian carrier would now be able to offer more value to passengers patronising member airlines of the alliance.
The specialised teams at Air India, Star Alliance and its member carriers will now be working on the integration process, which once completed, will make India's flag carrier a part of the Star Alliance network.
Star Alliance members include Singapore Airlines, US Airways, United, Swiss and Lufthansa.

The MUC hub makes sense for AI and LH. FRA and MUC are both very hard pressed for slots and both have reached over 95% of all slots being co-ordinated for Summer 2008. A situation which won´t change until the runway system is extended in both cases. FRA just got allowance to built a fourth runway, but as people can still take this to court, it might take a little longer then 2011 to get the runway operating. The third runway for MUC won´t be ready any sooner. If AI trades its FRA slots to LH and LH gives some slots in MUC to them and also does not need to increase service to India from there, then both win.
