China Southern to start Guangzhou-Vancouver in Jul 2009

Payload Asia magazine (Dec 2007) reports that China Southern has signed an agreement with Vancouver International Airport to start Guangzhou-Vancouver service in July 2009.

Currently, the only North American city the airline serves is Los Angeles, with Guangzhou-Los Angeles service 5 times a week using 777-200ER. The airline is also the first airline to put the 777-200ER onto trans-Pacific service.

I believe by then YVR will be the 3rd city China Southern serves as they will begin Beijing-Detroit service in 2009.

YVR hosts the largest Chinese speaking community outside the PRC. Pucking up Guangzhou as O&D is not a surprise as the overwhelming majority of community members can trace their ancestry to CAN and around. Should be a real blockbuster.
