  • Jetstar Passengers sleep rough

Jetstar passengers were left stranded in sydney airport after their Red Eye flight to Avalon was cancelled due to weather. They were then kicked out of T2 at Curfew time, Most vow to never fly the Budget Australian airline again.

On the news they showed the aircraft, looks a lot like an ex-saudi Arabia airline. Can anyone confirm jetstar bought one of their A320's?

Jetstar has denied responsibility for the late-night closure of a Sydney terminal which stranded hundreds of passengers, saying the decision to close the building was made by Sydney Airport.

But Sydney Airport says in a statement Jetstar staff had gone home by the time the terminal closed at 1am and the remaining 20 customers were told to move to the international terminal.

The terminal was closed after fierce storms delayed or forced the cancellation of several Jetstar flights.

Customers may be offered compensation for the bungle, which saw some sleep in a nearby bus shelter. Two flights to Melbourne, with about 130 passengers, were affected.

"Jetstar doesn't own or operate Terminal 2 at Sydney Airport, we didn't kick anybody out of anywhere," Jetstar spokesman Simon Westaway told the media in Melbourne this morning.

"A decision was made - and you'll have to take this up at the airport - that they be asked to leave the terminal and (at) that time to go to other alternative area."

"We've taken the matter up with the airport this morning to ensure that contingencies are in operation," he said.

Customers were told that part of the international facility remained open all night and food and drinks were available, he said.

Some walked or caught a taxi or the airport train to the international terminal, but others remained at Terminal 2.

Nine flights - two inbound and three outbound, including two to Melbourne and one to Adelaide - were affected.

Sydney Airport said in a statement passengers were told the Jetstar terminal would close at 11pm and that a 24-hour waiting area was available in the international terminal.

The closing time was then extended to around 1am, at which time there were approximately 20 Jetstar passengers in the terminal and no Jetstar staff in attendance, the statement said.

People were again advised that a 24-hour waiting area was available in the international terminal and some passengers left in taxis.

A woman left stranded outside Sydney Airport overnight after the cancellation of her Jetstar flight to Melbourne said she spent the night curled up in a bus shelter.

The passenger, Stacey, said the airline had a moral responsibility to her and her two friends to look after them.

She was among hundreds of airline passengers who were forced onto the footpath outside Sydney's Terminal Two when the airport closed its doors at the curfew time of 11pm.

"We were three young females left outside in the rain," Stacey told ABC Radio today.

"There's got to be some sort of moral responsibility to look after us, not just kick us out and tell us to fend for ourselves."

Stacey, along with a number of other passengers, found refuge in the bus shelter until the airport terminal reopened at 4am today.

"We spent the night on a bench in a bus shelter by Sydney Airport," she said.

"We weren't sure how it was going to pan out but they ended up letting us back into the terminal when it opened at 4 o'clock in the morning.

"I guess it was better than spending the whole night outside."

Jetstar said the airline's policy did not require it to assist passengers inconvenienced by adverse weather, and said it was not responsible for the terminal being closed.

"As a condition of carriage for weather-related delays, we're not compelled to find accommodation," Mr Westaway said.

But Stacey said that as she and her fellow Jetstar passengers waited for flights last night, Virgin Blue continued to fly its passengers in and out of Sydney.

"As the night went on we were hearing Virgin Blue flights leaving and arriving, and yet our flights were still delayed," she said.

"The weather cleared up and we were unsure as to why we were still waiting when apparently the airport was closed - yet other airlines were leaving as per normal."

She said she'll be paying a little more than her $79 each way tickets next time she flies.

"In the future I will pay a little more to get a reliable service," she said.

Mr Westaway said the stranded passengers resumed their journeys on flights as early as 6am today and he expected all 300 would be on their way by noon.

A Sydney Airport spokeswoman said she was not aware of the incident but confirmed the terminal's 11pm curfew.

"Generally, every evening, we do close the doors," she said.

SCREW THEM!!! How many times were they told to move to International terminal? And they purchased tickets on an LCC. Come on, that is crap where that passenger was like "they have a moral obligation..." - b/c they advised you to move to the other terminal. And she confirmed it - she payed $79.00 for the tickets. What did she expect? I can only assume that she wanted them to upgrade her to QF first class on the very next flight out!
Whatever is necessary, is never unwise.

Airlines are not responsible for weather and Jetstar doesn't own the terminal. Also when you have weather problems you never know when the planes will finally get there. I guess they should have walked over to Virgin Blue and tried to buy a ticket.

        Case closed.
