  • First Class Transatlantic Info and

OK. So we just got back from London and Paris and was able to book first class using AMEX miles on an AA 777 both ways.

As nice as it was, I think I expected a little bit more for some reason. Seats were OK and they did lie flat if you wanted. 8 inch personal video monitor with approx 30 movies, 10 tv shows and music and games...Food was good and the FA's were nice ( I am convinced they are nicer on International flights than in the states)..

It definitely made a difference in our travels but my question is who has a "great" first class for a US to London/Paris flight? We are heading to Italy next spring.

We used AA because I only needed 90k miles per person to do it and w/ AMEX I can transfer points to any of my FFlyer accounts.

I always hear about VA but looking at thier upper class on the website it looks very similar to AA just a little prettier.

    Thanks to all and any-

    UA First class

In August, I did the same with UAL. I booked a first class flight from KLAX to EDDF, and was flabbergasted at the service...POOR!! I have had better economy service years ago domestically. I flew in one of what many posts say is a coveted seat, 3J, and while the seat was good, the amenities offered were aweful. THe food was very bad, but not much can be said coming out of KLAX, and the prep service there is notoriously poor anyway. The IFET consisted of a fold out screen. Mine when it came out of its hiding oplace decided that it would rather fly hanging down diagonally to it holder, which was a bit anoying, as I either had to hold it up, or tilt my head ( I opted for a mix of the two!). Then during the flght, the IFET had to be restarted 5 times. As I was very close to where tis bastion of technology was, I decided to investigate. To my surprise, I found some vintage equipment, something which every child in the 70s wanted...mini tape players! They are still using TAPE DECKS for the movies. AND they break down all the time, according to the very flustered flight attendant. This waas all too much for me, so I opted for gin and tonic, and after a few of these, slept for the rest of this tragedy to Frankfurt. If I can muster the courage, I'll post the return soon...preview: -- Not much better!.

My first choice for first class across the Atlantic is BA.
      Across the Pacific it's Cathay.

I did AA in F to Rome in August and back via LHR. I was very pleased with the service and the new seats on the 767s. The food was very good, presentation was outstanding and the four FA's working the cabin were fantastic. The return was also enjoyable. I have no compliants about AA's F service domestic or Intl.

I am very sorry that AA's service did not meet or exceeds your standards. As for other airlines, I would highly recommend trying BA. Their First and Business Class products are fantastic. Virgin Atlantic is another option, but I somehow prefer service on BA (becuase I always sense a greater hint of professionality when flying with them).

Oh, and be sure to check out some of the posts in the Flight Review forum. Tom did a GREAAAAAT review of his trip to Rome (with AA):

And another member (Seat 2A) did a fantastic review of his flights on BA:

I hope that this helps a bit. Enjoy your trip!

            AA1819--

I think you might have taken my post a little bit the wrong way, which was not my intention.
It was a great trip and had no real complaints...

Like I said in my post, it was all really good from the food to the service, to the people.

I was just wondering if there is one carrier that has set itself apart from the others?

Personally, my biggest complaint (which really is not that big) would be the lack of a better IFE system.

I would have no prob's doing it again but since we are going back next year I wanted to look into any other options as well.

              Beachfront - I understand.

As for setting itself apart, the U.K. carriers have catered to higher standards. So, BA and VS's amenities might be a bit more posh than their American counterparts. If you were really willing to travel in Luxary - see if you CC will allow you to cash in for miles on EK (and connect via DXB). It's perhaps the only airline (save from SQ) that is known for incredibly luxurious travel amenities. Other airlines have great amenities (but will take you far away from a simply trip) such as Cathay Pacific, Jet Airways and the like.

Read the post again. What was free about my flight? It cost 90k points per person so somehow I spent 180k over XX amount of years on my amex.. Taxes were 214 per person so there is another $ 430...Am I saying I am rich and expected gold plated silverware...dont think so..

Tell me where I was not thankful for the service, I am just wondering who might be better as I have the somewhat nice option of using points on different airlines...There were good and great things about our flight but the point of the post was is this an average experiece or can it get better...I dont know if it can but I would like to if I am shelling out points for something, I would assume most people would want to know if they are spending their miles, dollars, euros or yen in the best manner possible...

Dont be a smartass and call me unappreciative, this is a forum and I am asking an honest question. If you have to post some ignorant response, just pass it up... based on the other responses I do not feel like I have crossed any lines ...

For further clarification let me quote myself:
                  "As nice as it was"
                  "Food was good "
"FA's were nice ( I am convinced they are nicer on International flights than in the states).."
"It definitely made a difference in our travels "
"It was a great trip and had no real complaints"

                  Thanks again.

I must apologize I'm not in my right mind, and you've earned your miles.. My bad, and disregard my post... You've earned your opinion, I on the other hand have not. With so many miles logged you've earned the right to think you've been cheated. I'll think twice before posting again... again, I'm sorry for being an asshole. I'm just appreciative of a thank you, let alone a trip across the Atlantic.

                      JJR,

Again, I do not feel I have been cheated, I am just asking if there is a better way to do this... I do not fly 1st class to europe all the time much less take a vacation but we are now just starting to do so...

You are entitled to your opinion, and if I was able to take something back, I would have retracted my un-contributing post. I was wrong to ridicule your feelings on such, and have much regret. I would suggest flying Continental, in my experiences, and again regret such an outburst on my part. Fly-On....

I second that. Why anyone would choose AA's inferior product in F is beyond me. But each to their own I guess.

Elite Miles my friend. Can't earn Advantage miles on BA Trans Atlantic flights. That's simply to many Elite Miles to give up.

SQ has a daily JFK-FRA, although the flight-time is too short to really enjoy their F. Alternatively, LX F is my personal favourite.
