  • HKG becomes more than an airport by linking ferry and airplane gates

HKG opens the links between its air terminal and its ferry gates this week. Trains will now run from the remote gates through the secured area of terminal 1 and 2 and then all the way to the secured area of the international pier which provides international high speed ferry connection to Macau and points in China.

Passengers transiting between high speed ferries and flights can transfer easily without leaving the secured area and thus do not need to go through immigration/customs and baggage claim. They can transfer like they are transferring between different flights from different terminal. Through check-in at ferry terminals in China is available for airlines such as Cathay Pacific, Dragonair, JAL, China Airlines and a few other airlines.

An additional mode of transport is planned currently with a high speed rail line planned to connect HongKong International Airport with Shenzhen Airport, which is about 30km north of HKG separated by the South China Sea. The planned train will connect the two airports with 15 minutes of travel to provide both airside-airside connection and landside-landside connection with segregated train cars. This would allow the two airports to function like two terminals in the same airport. This is being considered because HKG certainly have an advantage on the frequency and destinations of international flights while Shenzhen is stronger on domestic flights to the rest of China.
