  • BA Cabin Crew Strike

British Airways cabin crew has decided to strike next week. The strike will start on March 20 and will run through the 22nd and will resume on March 27th-31st. BA has currently stopped accepting reservations for March 20,21, and 22 and many flights have been canceled. Currently the airline is planning on having some replacement crew available and trying to run as full a schedule as possible.

Some service changes you'll notice: (These changes apply to all classes)

On flights under 9 hours: Only 1 meal will be served, snacks will be available in the galley. NO hot meals in any class and all special meal requests will be canceled.

On flights above 9 hours: One meal + one snack will be served, snacks will be available in the galley. Again no hot meal service in any class.

Domestic service: A cold breakfast and munchies (during lunch and dinner) will continue to be served on flights under 3 hours. On longer European flights a cold meal will be served.

All beverages (hot & cold) will continue to be available.

Airport operations will continue to operate normally.

BA's cabin crew is upset over last year's cuts, which left several part-time F/As on furloughs, the removal of hotel food benefits, reduced hours, etc. One of the main sticking points is that BA wants another salary freeze in 2010 and possibly 2011.

Currently full-time BA cabin crew salaries average around 29,000-35,000 pounds (US$44,000-53,000), many senior long-haul head flight attendants can make between 50,000-56,000 pounds per year (US$ 76,000-86,000). These figures don't include bonuses and other performance incentives.

The cuts were due to "BA's financial crisis" during the summer of 2009. Other cuts, included the removal of sandwiches from short-haul flights under 3 hours (breakfast is still served and munchies are served instead of sandwiches), the addition of the Club Kitchen buffet for the second meal on some Club World flights (rather than serving a second meal), the removal of the water bottle in Economy class meals (its now just a little cup-let), and the elimination of the second hot-meal in long-haul Economy (BA used to serve a second hot snack to some destinations). BA pilots and F/As agreed to a salary freeze last year.

Passengers can check out www.ba.com for the latest information on the strike.

I truly hope that BA will this mess, as it's going to cause a lot of inconvenience to travelers during the spring break week and those with Easter plans. I have had mostly good experiences on BA, mostly due to the very good cabin crew, otherwise the airline's amenities are pretty much average. Overall, I can see why BA's flight attendants are upset with their lessening benefits and hours, but they are still some of the best paid in the industry.

What are your guy's thoughts? and regards,

    Rohan
