Since work began in February on the construction of the Midfield Terminal Complex at Southwest Florida International Airport, 3 million cubic yards of dirt have been moved, enough to fill TECO Arena more than seven times. Three hundred of the planned 5,000 auger cast piles have been installed, each to a depth of 80 feet. Five miles of concrete drainage pipe have been installed, and 120,000 square yards of sod have been placed along the route of the new taxiway.
The first photo, which faces west, shows the new, yet-to-be paved taxiway that runs along the airport’s runway. The air traffic control tower and the airport’s cargo facility are in the upper right corner of the photo. The second photo also faces west, and shows the footprint of the new aircraft aprons that will frame the terminal’s three concourses. The cranes in the middle are driving auger cast piles for the terminal building. Photos by Aerial Innovations Inc., Tampa.
