  • Bombardier considering larger CSeries variant

    It would be a larger variant of the 300. I don't know how well this would do though in direct competition with the 738 and the 320. It would definitely provide customers with a different option though.

    Maybe such a version will be generally better suited for shorter routes compared to the relatively heavy Boeing 737NG and A320-family?

      My thoughts exactly! I see the stretch (and increase in capacity), but not an improvement in range. Most airlines that order the 737 and A320 do so for the capacity, yes, but have come to expect some pretty phenomenal ranges (considering how far we have come in aircraft design and limits in the past years). I can see this variant being ordered, perhaps, by a carrier that already operated the smaller variants of the type - but that wanted greater capacity - were not too concerned with the range, and didn't want to have another manufacturer in the fleet.

      In either event, I see this as a promising start from some of the 'smaller' aircraft manufacturers to challenge the Airbus and Boeing stronghold. It's going to be an interesting fight, to say the least.

      Question though;

      Do you think that we will eventually return to the two (Airbus and Boeing) consolidating the industry once more? Will they just buy out the competition once more (as Boeing has done with McDonald-Douglas) to keep their orders in their pocket, or are we ready for a more liberalized market?
      Whatever is necessary, is never unwise.

        I am sadly not an expert and don't have the knowledge to answer your interesting question.

        Yes, the aim could be to put more people into the aircraft and the reduced range is not the problem. For example it is not the optimal solution here in Germany to operate short domestic hops with A319s like Hamburg - Stuttgart etc..
        Just note: the A318/319 weighs more than an MD-80

        There are alternative aircraft-types with similar or slightly less capacities which are better suited for such short routes. On the other hand the concept of the A320-family often outweighs the disadvantage of operating relatively heavy aircraft. So adding an additional type is not always the best solution. So I can understand Lufthansa and others.

        Aircraft such the Boeing 737NG offer so much performance which is not really needed on many shorter sectors.
