  • ATL unveils new masterplan, includes new gates and 6th runway

Yes, not a big surprise by any means. But the new runway will be on the south side, between the current 9R/27L and 10/28. So that means aircraft landing on 10/28 will now have to cross two active runways (as per the diagram in the article) instead of one. It will be interesting to see how the airport handles that. The taxi from 10/28 is long enough as is. In the near-term both parking garages (north and south) will also be replaced, and cargo facilities will be expanded. The new perimeter taxiway will be built around 9L, which will be nice since aircraft frequently use the end of 9L to taxi back to the concourses when the traffic direction is west-bound.
