    Non-transferable tickets.

    Most discount non-refundable tickets are non-transferable. I believe this is an unfair practice that harms consumers. As a former employee at AA’s (now closed) reservation office, I have seen many passengers harmed by this policy. For example, a circumstance that prevents a passenger from traveling; but say his brother wants to travel and is willing to pay a service fee. That ticket should be transferable. I believe the cartel carriers (AA, UA) enforce this policy but ‘Low Cost Carriers’ like JetBlue and Spirit do not. Any thoughts?

    I think that when you buy a ticket you should know what you are getting into. The airlines don't lie, they tell you up front what the conditions of the ticket are. If you feel that you may need a refund or to change the name on the ticket don't but the discounted one. You are paying more for the convinience of having a flexible ticket.

      I agree. Same thing goes for people who want to take 3 47Kg bags and then say they didn't know and have no money. Tough.

        I totally agree with the baggage policy. Airlines are more than fair with that one and if a passenger elects to bring more than allowed, of course one should pay for it! There was a recent article in the Houston Chronicle that made a victim out of two passengers traveling from IAH to South America on Continental. They had like 5 or 6 OVERSIZED, excessively OVERWEIGHT bags and were just so surprised that the charge came to hundreds of dollars. The article was written with a theme that victimized the passengers and CO denies passengers the god given right to bring the kitchen sink (please do detect my sarcasm). I was furious and almost fired off a letter to the editor. As for non-transferable tickets, I am against the current policy. TRUE, though, airlines do try to not hide charges and restrictions. Even when you see the ‘$99 to Fort Lauderdale’ ad, the ‘one way based on r/t purchase plus taxes and PFCs’ part is clearly visible.

        If I had a nickel for every time I said ‘Restricted discount No-refundable fare with a $100.00 change fee plus any applicable fare difference.’ (And IF I had a penny for every person who did not recall the last five words of that phrase).

          a recent situation I encountered has left me bewildered and confused (.. more than usual) wondering HOW the airlines of today have any "friends" at all... anywhere?

          I'm a Travel Agent by profession, currently doing temp work and was not in active "duty" when the new nonrefundable rules took place but knew about them in general. On a recent assignment I saw the raw truth... The client, a large company, was hosting a function in another city and many employees were taking spouses or guests. The day prior to departure I receive a call from "Mr." to let me know that "Mrs." father had just passed away and to cancel their plans. I checked the rules of their fare which, by the way, are written in a circular, redundant format that would print out 5 or so pages on paper all to basically say "yuck fou"! So I call the airline and told that they (the ones mourning the death of a relative and making arrangements for the last thing they want to be arranging at a time when it's hard to just get out of bed to face another day) had until departure time the next day to make up their minds as to what dates they wanted and destination or lose the tickets entirely! I was as shocked to hear this as the agent I was speaking with was embarrassed to be having to dispense such nonsense!

          Now, I've been in this biz a long time and could go on with creative ways to dodge "this" to get to "that" but isn't that sort of behavior what the airlines are trying to do away with? The Airline/Travel Agent relationship has always been "love/hate" at different levels but this is just another "brick in the wall"! Not to mention that collectively, excepting one very successful friendly carrier, these airlines are boo-hooing red ink tears to our government begging for money . or else "we'll go bankrupt? or they cry "oh fearful flying public, travel again, it's ok". So, as the brave folks of our country endure the stress that now goes with a simple trip to the airport, the airlines go a step further to make things even worse! I say "Smooth move to all you Airline Execs, I sure hope the bluebird of happiness takes a hot, steamin' poop on your golden parachute!" [img]images/smiles/icon_mad.gif[/img]

            Another interesting story, not about non-transferable, though.

            Cartel Carriers are reluctant to ‘reroute’ discount fares – albeit usually no harm or little to no lost revenue to them. Example; I had family of four roundtrip on discount leisure published fare from PIT-SAN traveling on a different cartel. They had taken the outbound and then ‘Mr.’ Father passed away. Family needed to travel to PHL for memorial services. The carrier they took would not reroute them SAN-PHL instead of SAN-PIT; just stated ‘purchase a one way fare.’ And we all know how much that would cost on moments notice SAN-PHL. They dialed up my cartel and got me - a former 'stupidvisor.' Now, if this were a WN city, say SAN-IND – I would have handed out Southwest’s toll-free number.

            Due to the fact that I am human and have some compassion, I broke my Cartel Carrier’s rules and offered a discount one way fare – I had the authorization to do so. So I flew the family SAN-PHL and they said they will drive the dead relative’s car PHL-PIT. This was of no harm to my carrier and considered extra revenue. It turns out the ‘Mr.’ was a United States Congressman from Pennsylvania. They usually travel on ‘Government’ fares – which are treated like full fares, changeable without penalty, refundable, etc.

            As far as travel agents – who ticket something like 80% of a carrier’s passengers – the airlines treat them worse than dirt. That is terrible.
