Nothing to squawk at; the plane landed safely.

Are you talking about the 767 that ate its own tire?

                      WAS an emergency declared?

SHOULD it have been (or not been) declared?

And if so, WHO declared it?

I don't expect that F-16's are part of the standard procedure for IFSD, so somebody must have declared this a semi-serious situation. Let us not forget what tire fragments did to a certain pointy French airliner.

Yes; I receive 7700 squawks on my phone, and received notification of the emergency via squawk. Don't know who declared the emergency. I think it was very reasonable to declare one, as it seems a tire was mangled, and pieces of it were possibly getting into an engine. Sometimes I take screen shots, but don't have one of this squawks. My phone is very unreliable because it's run by this phone-idiot. I tried to watch the landing, but didn't manage to.

Here's a link to pertinent information from a FlightRadar24 facebook page.

This answers questions 1 (yes) and 3 (the pilot).
Should it had been declared? Of course, although BB will object that to declare it they used "maydady mayday mayday" (although in a very relaxed way).

. Better? It's not an emergency! And I didn't know, nor do I care if the used a Mayday call. Though I am surprised that an Air Canada pilot would do so
