          The L1011 prototype could perform automatic takeoffs already decades ago. Too bad that they couldn't get a certification for this feature.

            The L1011 was developed in an age where computers often malfunctioned and could not be trusted with so many human lives at stake. That mentality had to be overcome during the FBW developments of the 80's and 90's, and it mostly was. Today, these systems are simply more reliable and trustworthy than the broad spectrum of airline pilots, who continue to make occasional errors (being human and all). I fail to see why, in the estimation of the industry, autoland is routine now whereas takeoffs are beyond the capability of automation. The runway track and pitch guidance aspect is now routine on the flight directors. Why not automate them?

            Interesting that the tech that Bobby posts here still relies upon the pilots for thrust settings. The consensus must be that only a human pilot can be trusted to reject during takeoff (though braking is automated). I would concur. There is still a critical role for human pilots here. It's just not the role they play in a J-3 with no electrical system.
